Regarding Those Who Say The Mujahideen Turn Away From The ‘Ulema

The Commander, the Fighting Scholar, the Adviser, the one whom Allah chose for an escape from America’s toughest prison, Abu Yahya al-Libi, حفظه الله, said:

“I am sure that you know that the most difficult of affairs faced by the Mujahidun is in the arenas of Jihad, is the lack of - if not total absence - of truthful scholars who practice what they preach, those who were supposed to stand side by side with their sons. So that they can drink from their fountain, taking from their knowledge, learning from their manners, taking advice from their guidance and following the guidelines of their verdicts.

The Mujahidun, by the grace of Allah, without a doubt trust in your likes. Those who stand firm upon the truth in face of opposition, they love you and respect you. You may not know what they feel in their hearts, when they are told of your supportive words and advices.

How would it be if you were with them, in each others sight, listening to your advice without intermediaries ?

By Allah, O noble Shaykh, the arenas of Jihad with your sons and your loved ones. You will find the utmost respect, that which you have seen nor heard of.

By Allah! And I reiterate, by Allah!

You will find that your knowledge and foresight, on top of what Allah has already given you will be multiplied greatly. Our noble Shaykh, may Allah increase you in your virtue and raise your station in both worlds. Indeed the arenas of Jihad are filled with new unheard of issues. Most of which require a speedy response, not able to be postponed.

The Mujahidun are in much need of good scholars of your likes, to refer to in these manners. And you are the ones able in this, and we think there is much good in you.

If not, then at least we must be able to seek your counsel, refer to you, seek your opinions and verdicts in the issues we face.”

Scores Dead in Zionist Raid on Gaza

At least 200 Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed in an Israeli aerial bombardment on Hamas security installations. Israel launched air attacks across the besieged Gaza Strip on Saturday, threatening that further operations would be carried out.

Emergency services said that at least 300 people had been wounded. Witnesses reported heavy damage as at least 30 missiles were fired. Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, said that the operation would not be short.

"The operation will go on and be intensified as long as necessary," he said on Saturday. An Israeli military spokesman added that any "Hamas target is a target".
As dusk fell, Israel continued to bomb the strip, firing on a metal foundry in the south.

Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister, condemned the attack and demanded an immediate cessation.

Hours after the Israeli assault, Gaza fighters fired home-made rockets into southern Israel, heeding calls by Hamas and other affiliated Palestinian groups to avenge the attacks, unprecedented in their scale.

One Israeli was killed in the rocket fire, medics said.

Taher al-Noono, a Hamas spokesman, described Israel's operation as a "massacre", adding: "However, our resolve cannot be dented and cannot be shaken. We will continue our struggle with absolute strength and steadfastness."

Islam Shahwan, a Hamas police spokesman, said a police graduation ceremony in Gaza City was struck by Israel. Among those killed was Tawfiq Jabber, the Gaza chief of police.

The Hamas-run interior ministry said all security compounds in the Strip had been destroyed.

Gaza is densely populated. Its 1.5 million residents area already experiencing shortages in medicine, power and basic supplies due to 18 months of an Israeli blockade.

Israel in ‘all-out war’ with Hamas

Israel's military is in an "all-out war" with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Ehud Barak, the defence minister, says. Palestinian medical sources say at least 345 Gazans have been killed and another 1,450 wounded in three consecutive days of Israeli bombardment in the heavily-populated territory.

"We have nothing against Gaza residents, but we are engaged in an all-out war against Hamas and its proxies," Barak said on Monday. There were also growing fears that a ground offensive was being planned after Israel declared a "closed military zone" around the Gaza Strip. Israel says the creation of a buffer zone along the border will help protect it from rocket attacks.

Civilians, including journalists, could be banned from an area between 2km and 4km deep under the policy. On previous occasions, such a move has sometimes been followed by military operations.
"This operation will expand and deepen as much as needed," Barak said. "We went to war to deal a heavy blow to Hamas, to change the situation in the south."

Trapped Palestinians

Tanks and troops have been massed in the area since the attacks, referred to by the Israeli military as Operation Cast Lead, was launched on Saturday.

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Gaza City, said that there was little the residents of Gaza could do to prepare for any possible ground assault.
"In a city that is so densely-populated, a ground offensive would mean urban warfare, street-to-street fighting ... leaving many Palestinians in the crossfire," he said.

"Unlike other conflict zones where there is the possibility to flee the war zone, Gaza itself has become the war zone. There is nowhere for the population to go, they are in the middle of all these attacks."
Israel said it began pounding the Gaza Strip with missiles fired from warplanes and helicopter gunships in order to halt the rocket and mortar attacks by Palestinian fighters.
"Military officials said yesterday that this operation will go on until Hamas stops firing missiles into southern Israel," Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel Hamid, reporting from southern Israel, said.

"They are also very much aware that they wouldn't really be able to stop that, but at least they will try to degrade the capability of Hamas."

Israeli justification

Scores of rockets have hit southern Israel since the offensive got under way.
On Monday, an Israeli Arab was killed and eight others wounded when one of the missiles hit a construction site in the city of Ashkelon.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister, said the Israeli offensive was aimed at Hamas and not the Palestinian people.

"We tried to avoid this. You know that Israel accepted the truce that was initiated by the Egyptians in order to create peace and quiet. We adopted the truce. What we got in return? We got in return daily attacks, we got in return smuggling of weapons to Gaza Strip with long-range [capabilities]," she said.

Livni also appealed to Palestinian civilians to leave for safer places within the Gaza Strip and advised them against staying in places close to Hamas infrastructure.

Support for Israel came from the US, with the White House saying Hamas must halt cross-border rocket fire.

"In order for the violence to stop, Hamas must stop firing rockets into Israel and agree to respect a sustainable and durable ceasefire," Gordon Johndroe, a White House spokesman said.

Egyptian gesture

On Monday, Egyptian authorities allowed ambulances carrying several wounded Palestinians to cross into Egypt through the Rafah border crossing for medical treatment. Hospitals in Gaza have been overwhelmed by casualties since Israel started its aerial blitz on the territory.

Egypt also allowed lorries loaded with humanitarian aid to enter its border crossing with the Gaza Strip. Lorries with food and medical supplies have been lining up outside the Egypt-Gaza border since early morning.

The UN relief and works agency said on Monday that at least 51 Palestinian civilians, including women and children, were confirmed to be among those killed in the Gaza Strip. An UNRWA spokesman said the figure, which was based on visits to hospitals and medical centres was "conservative" and "certainly rising".

Four young girls from the same family in the northern town of Jabaliya and two young boy from Rafah were among those killed in the latest raids, Palestinian medics said.
Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros said the situation at the Shifa hospital in Gaza City was chaotic as the territory's health system struggled to cope with the more than 1,400 people injured.

"Hundreds of people are just waiting outside ... the problem is that there simply aren't enough beds to cope with the number of injured," she said.
"Medical sources here are telling us they are running out of everything, from gauzes to saline solutions, and critically now they are running out of almost every type of blood."
a six-month truce between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip ended on December 19.

The U.S. Health Care Crisis

New statistics are in on the quality of health care in the United States, and the news is bad.

A 2008 report on international health care rankings by the World Health Organization (WHO) demonstrates that inadequate health care is a major American problem. We Americans pride ourselves on having the best health care system in the world. In fact, we have only the most expensive system.

According to researchers at Johns Hopkins Medical School, the United States spends 44 percent more per capita than Switzerland, which has the second most expensive system. We spend 134 percent more per capita than the median for industrialized states in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Yet the high price of US medical care has not bought us the best system – not by a long shot. According to the WHO report, the United Sates ranks 27th internationally in healthy life expectancy at birth and 39th in infant mortality.

Deficient health care is a national problem that requires a national solution, especially given the current fiscal constraints on the states. Although Obama did not commit to such a plan during the presidential campaign, the only real solution is universal health care coverage for all Americans through a single-payer system.

Even though it achieves universal coverage, such a plan lowers overall costs by vastly reducing administrative expenses and increasing prevention and other efficient forms of medical care. It would slash the cost of prescription drugs by mustering the full buying power of the federal government across the entire market. It would preserve the choice of medical practitioners who would be reimbursed on a fee for service basis. It would create equity across the states, diminishing the vast disparities in health care that now exist.

A single-payer system would do far more for American industry than any bailout plan by the federal government. A single-payer system would make American business much more competitive by relieving it of the enormous costs of insuring workers and retirees, costs that are not borne by our competitors abroad.

According to a report by the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, ‘‘Between the health care that we now have and the health care that we could have lies not just a gap, but a chasm.” We cannot cross this chasm by tinkering with the present system. The Obama administration can best fulfill its promise of bringing real change to America by fundamentally reforming our terribly flawed health care system.

Liberal Media Bias (The Worst of the Week)

Certainly delivering a unique take on the Blagojevich case, in a NBC Nightly News story on why Illinois politics are so corrupt, NBC reporter Lee Cowan characterized the Governor of Illinois as a politician who “fell victim” to Chicago’s political machine. Apparently, corruption was just irresistible. Cowan contended: “The Windy City is a political stew of characters, a cast of players that even Hollywood would envy. Governor Rod Blagojevich is just the latest squeaky wheel in Chicago’s political machine. Although he promised to be different, he fell victim, prosecutors allege, to history.”

Presumably, Cowan didn’t intend to assign his own characterization — “victim” — to prosecutors, and just meant that prosecutors allege Blagojevich has taken the same path as too many of his predecessors. Cowan followed with a soundbite from a local reporter, who explained: “If there isn’t a deal behind the scenes, it almost makes life not worthwhile.”

Angst on PBS Over Too-Long Wait for Obama’s Inauguration

In the midst of a discussion about President-elect Barack Obama’s national security team, Washington Week host Gwen Ifill program sought confirmation for her theory that “what people are beginning to say is that this President-elect should be President now” as “people are saying why isn’t Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers?” New York Times reporter Peter Baker agreed: “That’s right, exactly.” He proceeded to fret over how “people voted for change and this strange, odd 77-day waiting period that we impose…between our election and our inauguration” just isn’t compatible with the “hyperactive 24/7 fast-moving culture that we have today.” Baker admired how “Obama is trying to find some balance between respecting President Bush,” whom Baker conceded is “still in charge,” and “finding a way to assert leadership.”

Dan Rather: Biggest Crisis Since Pearl Harbor, So Inaugurate Sooner

Appearing on Morning Joe on MSNBC, former CBS anchor Dan Rather chided President Bush for not doing enough during his lame duck period and argued for moving Inauguration Day up in the future to December 1. And although Rather didn’t explain specifically what Bush wasn’t doing enough about (The financial crisis? The terrorist incident in India?), he did hyperbolically fret: “But, we’re in possibly, possibly the biggest crisis we’ve been in since December 7, 1941 and maybe since the time of the Civil War.” Addressing the past practice of inaugurating presidents in March, Rather lobbied: “Thank heaven, we now swear them in, new Presidents, in January. I’d be in favor of moving it up to December 1st.”

ABC on Caroline Kennedy in the Senate: ‘Exciting,’ ‘Tantalizing’

On Good Morning America, various hosts and reporters gushed over the “exciting,” “tantalizing” prospect that Caroline Kennedy could replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate, should the former First Lady be confirmed as Barack Obama’s Secretary of State. ABC News political director David Chalian enthused that “on top of the new Obama administration that she was a huge proponent and supporter of, it [the appointment] would just rise to this moment of, sort of, a return to that age of Camelot.” Weekend GMA co-host Bill Weir began the segment by wondering: “And who could upstage a Clinton but a Kennedy?” Later, fellow co-host Kate Snow cooed: “So, tantalizing. Kennedys and Obamas and Clintons, all the talk.” Clearly agreeing, Weir enthused: “Exciting to talk about.”

The Physiology of Music, Part 3: Rhythm, Movement, and Physical Therapy

Music moves us emotionally, but it also moves us physically. Though the sensory-motor pathways that relay musical information from nerves in the inner ear to motor areas in the brain and motor neurons in muscles are not entirely clear, the pursuit of their discovery has cast light on several interesting aspects of human sensory perception.

The sensory elements of music that have been associated with motor movement include beat, tempo, and rhythm. While our auditory interpretation of these elements involves multiple regions of the brain, there exist three regions that are specifically involved in the perception of rhythm and beat. These three regions include the supplementary motor area, which is located in the cerebral cortex, the basal ganglia, which lie deep within the cerebral hemispheres, and the cerebellum, which is located behind the brainstem and below the occipital lobes at the back of the brain.

The cerebellum plays a particularly interesting role in influencing motor responses to external beat and rhythm cues, which often are used for the entrainment of motor responses to rhythmic patterns, in which an external rhythm stimulus is used to learn movements. For example, in musical rhythm entrainment in dancers, information about beat is relayed by neurons that extend through the brainstem and into the anterior region of the cerebellum.

It is likely that a similar neuronal pathway involving the cerebellum is established in a form of movement rehabilitation known as rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS), which is a type of physical therapy used in patients affected by Parkinson disease, stroke, and other movement disorders. In RAS, beat and rhythm serve as external stimuli, and these stimuli are used to establish a “priming pathway” of auditory signaling that cues movement.

RAS acts via the reticulospinal pathway, a nerve tract that descends from the reticular formation in the brainstem to structures in the spinal cord. This pathway plays a central role in maintaining muscle tone and in controlling voluntary movements. While some RAS patients may use a metronome to provide a clear beat, many patients choose music with a pronounced rhythm and beat that matches their initial frequency of movement. As mobility improves, tempo is increased, enabling the frequency of movements to become reestablished to levels that are closer to normal.

Today, there remain countless questions about the affects of music on the human brain and body. Researchers are on the brink of discoveries that will tell us more not only about the benefits of music in therapeutic terms but also about the intricacies of human sensory perception. And as more studies are conducted, music-based therapies such as RAS are sure to gain recognition as valuable adjuncts to traditional medicine.

‘Helicopter Ben’ to the Rescue? (The U.S. Federal Reserve Runs Scared)

There was much brave talk Tuesday when the Federal Reserve effectively cut interest rates to zero. One radio reporter said the central bank saw this as “an opportunity” to take proactive steps against the recession. Wall Street rallied. Yet the reality is that the Fed is very afraid.

Despite the hurried $700 billion bailout passed by Congress and as much as $2 trillion in largely secretive “facilities” the Fed has made available to lending institutions and who know what else, the economy is in free fall.

Credit markets remain seized up. More than 1.9 million jobs have been lost this year, punctuated by November’s sudden acceleration of 533,000. These numbers significantly undercount the real situation, leaving out those who have given up looking for work — say, in the bleeding banking sector — or the underemployed.

‘Helicopter Ben’ to the Rescue? (The U.S. Federal Reserve Runs Scared)
Jon Talton - December 18th, 2008

Federal Reserve Bank, Washington, DC; Philip Beaurline/SuperStockThere was much brave talk Tuesday when the Federal Reserve effectively cut interest rates to zero.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, who is one of the leading scholars of Fed policy during the Great Depression, is most fearful of deflation, which is now a serious danger. Deflation was one of the defining reasons why the Depression was so deep and prolonged. Back then, the smartest monetary policy makers believed the budget must be balanced and interest rates increased.

Ooops.

Although Bernanke is determined not to repeat that mistake, it’s unclear how much he can do to avoid the reckoning that I call the Great Disruption. Many of today’s best and brightest are similarly befuddled by today’s unique challenges.

Fed limited.

The Fed is limited in its ability to levitate an economy that has collapsed. To quote Alan Greenspan from a mild recession in 1991, “You can’t push a string.” In extremis, the central bank can, as Bernanke memorably said, drop shrink-wrapped pallets of dollars out of helicopters. In other words, inflate the currency. Bernanke apparently believes he can get away with it. Inflation has been tame lately. Unfortunately that is almost entirely a function of falling energy prices, itself an ominous signal of anticipated demand destruction by severe recession — and traders desperately unwinding their futures contracts to get liquidity. Also, the recent inflation numbers are backward-looking. The vast expansion of the money supply may be baking a severe inflation in the cake. This possibility could also unnerve the foreign lenders upon which the United States now depends.

Yet even zero interest rates may not resusitate the economy. Japan’s central bank took similar steps after the Japanese real-estate bubble burst in the late 1980s, and the country still endured a recession that lasted more than a decade. Nor can the Fed create value from “toxic assets” that are in fact derivatives composed of nothing tangible. In many cases they are mere swindles, little more brazen than the $50 billion Ponzi scheme alleged to have been cooked up by Bernard Madoff, one of the lions of Wall Street.

Finally, one must approach the Fed’s action with skepticism because of the way the central bank and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson have managed the crisis so far. After denying the gravity of the problem for months, the two panicked lawmakers into passing a “rescue” that independent auditors agree lacks direction or proper oversight. Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual were allowed to fail, while Paulson’s alma mater Goldman Sachs was propped up and AIG was notoriously thrown taxpayer money. And all, so far, to little effect except for continues big compensation for the big cheeses.

The immediate rally from the rate-cut may well be just a pump-and-dump on a grand scale, as the big traders try to make a day or two’s gain from one of the stock market’s two drivers, greed. The other, fear, will kick in soon enough. Consider how many wealthy individuals and institutions are willing to get zero gain in exchange for the security of Treasury notes.

The problems behind the current unpleasantness were years in the making. Among them:

* deregulation;
* a hollowed out manufacturing economy replaced by one based on fraud and house-building;
* stagnant wages for most Americans;
* over-consolidation of industries;
* Fed-generated market bubbles;
* and income inequality not seen since the eve of the last depression.

The larger issues of the Great Disruption, particularly peak oil and climate change, have yet to be addressed.
As long as policy-makers keep trying to save that which is unsustainable we won’t even have begun the long path to recovery.

Parliament speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani said Thursday an overwhelming majority of the lawmakers who attended the session voted in favor of the pact.

The agreement was passed on Thursday with 144 of the 198 lawmakers present voting in favor. A total of 35 other lawmakers also voted against the agreement.

The US and Iraq had been at loggerheads for the past 11 months over key issues in the deal.

The pact --which had earlier been approved by the Iraqi Cabinet-- will now provide ground for the US troops to stay in the war-torn country beyond their UN mandate which expires in December.

Under the deal, US forces will pull out of Iraqi cities by June 30 and the entire country by the end of 2011. Iraq will oversee the activities of the US troops during the period.

The pact must be rubber stamped by Iraq's Presidential Council and is scheduled to be put to referendum on July 30, 2009.

“Who’s The Real Partner For Peace?”

Binyamin Netanyahu told U.S. media: "We must cause these people despair, we must make their lives unbearable", referring to the Palestinians.

Is this your partner for peace?

When Netanyahu takes charge, America will be involved in more wars in the Middle East, as he had stated that that he wanted another round in Lebanon and wanted to go after Iran more vigorously.

Does the U.S. not have enough trouble at home and around the world than to be drawn into wars for Israel’s sake?

You've got a Russian bear running loose in your backyard with China readying itself to be the dominant economic and military power on earth in our life time. It is total incompetence to isolate yourself.

Let these people live out their Zionist dreams and concentrate on what is important to the Americans themselves. Isolating yourself with Israel is and will always be a downward spiral.

“Israel Ready to Attack Iran is Nonsense!”

Israel would be bombarded many ways if it attacked Iran; economically, politically, and militarily.

First of all, Israel does not have the capability to attack Iran effectively.

Second, they can't get there without flying over the airspace of U.S. allies and over Iraq, where they would fly over one hundred fifty thousand U.S. troops. The Iraqi Accord allows for NO use of the country for an attack on Iran.

Third, the political consequences of an Israeli attack would be devastating to Israel. Example: Right now, nearly half of Israel's military sales abroad go to India, and India is trying to build good ties with Iran to gain access to its oil and gas, including through a pipeline across Pakistan. How would India react to an Israeli attack on Iran?

Fourth, an Israeli attack will force disruption of oil into the currently bleeding world economy. How would the world react to such attack?

Finally, Israel would be bombarded many ways if it attacked Iran; economically, politically, and militarily. At the end, the Israelis would suffer more then they can imagine. This would change their position from being a master to being a slave. Will the Israelis come to their senses? Time will tell.

Eyes Wide Shut

Occupation arouses resistance, resistance arouses repression, repression means economic punishment.

The day before yesterday, two documents appeared side by side in Haaretz: a giant advertisement from the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and the results of a public opinion poll.

The proximity was accidental, but to the point. The PLO ad sets out the details of the 2002 Saudi peace offer, decorated with the colorful flags of the 22 Arab and the 35 other Muslim countries which have endorsed the offer.

The public opinion poll predicts a landslide victory for Likud, which opposes every single word of the Saudi proposal.

The PLO ad is a first of its kind. At long last, the PLO leaders have decided to address the Israeli people directly.

The ad discloses to the Israeli population the exact terms of the all-Arab peace offer: full recognition of the State of Israel by all Arab and Muslim countries, full normalization of relations - in return for Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders and the establishment of the Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The refugee problem would be solved by mutual agreement – meaning that Israel could veto any solution it considered unacceptable.

I have said it before: if this offer had been made on June 4, 1967, the day before the Six Day War, Israelis would have felt as if the Messiah had arrived. But when it was published in 2002, many Israelis saw it as a cunning Arab ploy to rob Israel of the fruits of its 1967 victory.

The Israeli government has never officially reacted to this historic offer. Public opinion and the media ignored it almost completely, walled in by the national consensus that there is no chance for peace.

Recently, the old offer woke up to new life. Shimon Peres and Ehud Barak discovered it suddenly, as if they had found a treasure in a hidden cave. Tzipi Livni discovered that it has some interesting points. That is the background to the blessed initiative of Saeb Erekat’s “PLO Negotiation Department” to publish the ad.

Israeli public reaction: nil.

The public opinion poll, on the other hand, made a deep impression. It cast its shadow over the entire political arena.

True, there are still 80 days to go before election day, and in Israel 80 days is a very, very long time. Moreover, unlike American polls, Israeli polls conducted for the media are notoriously unreliable. Nonetheless, the poll caused a shock.

It says that if the elections were held this week, the Likud would have 34 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, three times more than it has now, and become the largest faction. Kadima would get only 28 seats, one less than in the present Knesset. (Explanation: Kadima would lose many voters, who would return to Likud, but gain almost the same number from Labor.) The Labor party would come down to 10 seats, half of their present miserable number. Shas would get the same number, as would the ultra-right Liberman. Meretz would rise from 5 to 7. (In Yediot Aharonot’s competing poll, Likud got 32, Kadima 26 and Labor 8.)

The dazzling ascent of Likud is an ominous phenomenon by itself, but even more important is the general picture: the bloc of all the parties that support peace, whether by paying lip service or sincerely (called “the Left”) will have, according to the polls, 56 seats at most, as against the 64 seats of all the anti-peace parties combined (called “the Right”).

Meaning: if the election had taken place this week, the outcome would have been a Knesset devoted to the continuation of the occupation, the settlements and the annexation. Binyamin Netanyahu would be Prime Minister and would be able to choose freely between a dozen possible compositions of the next government coalition.

How did Netanyahu achieve such a status? After all, 10 years ago he was shamefully thrown out of the Prime Minister’s office by a public that had decided that they could not stand him for one more day. No other previous prime minister has attracted so much opposition, disgust and even loathing.

For several months now Netanyahu has been behaving like a model pupil. He kept silent when it was right to keep silent. He acted in a statesman-like manner. And then, like a magician at a children’s birthday party, he pulled one rabbit after another from his top hat. Every few days another personality joined Likud with much fanfare, in a well controlled selection and dosage: Binyamin Begin, a man of the extreme right and Dan Meridor, of the moderate right, Assaf Hefetz, former police chief and Moshe (“Bogi”) Yaalon, former army chief, and more and more.

Big and small stars, who gave the impression that Likud is now regarded by everybody as the coming governing party. A multicolored party, a party of renewal, headed by an experienced and responsible leader. A party in which there are many shades of opinion, but which is united by a platform that says no to withdrawal, no to a Palestinian state, no to any compromise on Jerusalem, no to any meaningful peace negotiation. And, of course: no to the Arab peace offer.

Is there a yes? I almost forgot: Netanyahu proposes an “economic peace” – to ameliorate the situation of the Palestinians in the West Bank, so that some day in the future, before or after the coming of the Messiah, Israel could perhaps reach an accommodation – and perhaps not. But economic amelioration under an occupation regime is, of course, an oxymoron. Occupation arouses resistance, resistance arouses repression, repression means economic punishment. Nobody is going to invest money in an occupied territory.

If Netanyahu is elected, we must expect four years in which we shall not only not advance toward peace by one single inch, but, on the contrary, the ongoing thrust of the settlement enterprise will push peace ever further away.

The flight of Tzipi Livni, on the other hand, is not gaining any height. That is another clear conclusion of the polls.

She has had a few months of grace. When the whole country was mesmerized by the corruption affairs of Ehud Olmert, Livni looked, in comparison, like a shining white dove. An ideal candidate: also a woman, also honest, also speaking the language of ordinary human beings, also one who believes what she says.

But after Olmert’s resignation, corruption disappeared as a central theme of the elections. So what does Tzipi have to offer?

She has no overpowering charisma. She is no orator (and that is perhaps to the good). She does not excite. She does not appeal to the emotions. She does not touch the heart of people. She is compelled to rely on rational arguments.

But what is her rationale? She is a great believer in “peace negotiations”. But “peace negotiations”, like the “political process”, can easily become a substitute for peace itself.

Livni does not offer an exciting peace message. She does not draw up a peace proposal of her own. She is “diplomatic” and keeps her cards close to her chest. No clear solution for Jerusalem (Don’t even mention it! It may provide ammunition for Bibi!), nor for the refugee problem (God forbid!).

She has promised the No. 2 spot on her list to Shaul Mofaz, who could easily find his place between Bibi, Begin and Bogi. This is not the way to change the hearts of the hundreds of thousands of indifferent and/or tired citizens, who believe that “there is no partner for peace”. Neither are there any new acquisitions: no new personalities are joining Kadima. There is no sense of an approaching victory. The chances don’t look good.

The situation of the Labor party is even worse. Much worse. The polls give Labor 10 seats at most, perhaps only 8. The party that in its former incarnations kept absolute control over the Yishuv and the new state for 44 consecutive years may shrivel in the next Knesset to the status of fifth largest faction (after Likud, Kadima, Shas and Liberman.)

No wonder. Like an aging strip-teaser, the party has dropped all its garments. It has embraced “swinish capitalism” (a Peres coinage) like the other parties. As far as peace is concerned, it limps behind Kadima, and sometimes even tries to outflank Likud on the right. It seems that its real platform is down to one single clause: Ehud Barak must remain Minister of Defense under whoever will be the next Prime Minister, Netanyahu or Livni.

It is not an attractive sight: not only the rats are leaving the sinking ship, but also the admiral himself: Ami Ayalon, former commander of the Israeli navy, announced this week that he is leaving the party. The incumbent 19 Knesset members are squaring up for a fight to the death over the few remaining “real” seats, competing with each other and with the handful of new joiners (including the director of “Peace Now”, Yariv Oppenheimer, and the journalist Daniel Ben-Simon).

Ehud Barak is a walking disaster. But he cannot be removed from the leadership of Labor before the elections. The party is crawling towards its rout with eyes wide shut.

Several men of letters, professors and political consultants, some of them refugees from Labor, have done something: they got together and announced that they would ally themselves to Meretz, in order to create a kind of super-Meretz.

They did raise an echo, but the recent polls still give the reinforced Meretz no more than 7 seats (compared to the present 5). Not quite a revolution.

Why? The initiators are well known. They are members of the Ashkenazi elite, like all of Meretz. The public got the impression that instead of the past and far-past leaders who have left the Meretz leadership one after another (Shulamit Aloni, Yossi Sarid, Yossi Beilin, Ran Cohen, all of them with positive credentials), other people are coming in, good people but not really different, with the same good but failed slogans. They have no new message for the new generation, for the Oriental Jews, for the Arab citizens, for Russian immigrants, for the secular people who want to fight against religious encroachment.

The active peace groups, with their young and enthusiastic members, were not invited, so as not to give the party a “radical” look. In the best case, the renewed party might take a few seats from Labor. As far as the general picture is concerned, that would be quite unimportant, since only changes in the balance between the two large blocs have any real effect. Many new voters must be mobilized.

There is a place for a new Left party, with a new name, a new spirit and a message of hope, that will do an Obama: arouse the masses of the young generation, infect them with enthusiasm, promise real change.

Such an experiment was conducted just now in the Tel-Aviv municipal elections with astonishing results. A new election list appeared out of nowhere, the young generation of Tel-Avivians joined it with gusto. It attracted the new voters, as well as voters who are disgusted with all politicians, people with a green agenda, people with a social conscience, gays and lesbians, and many others. Hundreds volunteered for it, their candidate attracted a third of the votes against a popular incumbent mayor.

Meaning: yes, it is possible. But it will not happen this time.

Barack Obama will enter the Oval Office twenty days before the Israeli elections. He has still got a chance to have a decisive impact on the outcome. Nobody in Israel wants to quarrel with the United States.

If the new President announces immediately after taking office that he is determined to achieve peace between Israel and the Arabs in the spirit of the Saudi peace initiative, before the end of 2009, this will influence many voters.

If Netanyahu is elected, President Obama will be faced with a dilemma: either to enter into a serious conflict with the Government of Israel, with all the American domestic implications, or to leave peace in the freezer, like his predecessors.

The American elections were important for Israel. The Israeli elections will be important for America, too.
